CLIMATE COMMUNICATIONS BAROMETER

STATE OF THE SECTOR SURVEY & REPORT

Over the past few years, climate communications has evolved and matured substantially, to the point that it can, in our view, be considered a distinct professional discipline.

As a result, we felt it was timely to form a baseline understanding of this emerging sector, and to identify and benchmark the trends shaping climate communication.

The results of this report can be used by organisations and consultants to analyse communications functions, identify potential gaps and new opportunities, prepare for emerging trends and risks and support workforce development and planning, and employee wellbeing.

2026 BAROMETER: A Maturing Profession in Need of Stronger Foundations

The inaugural Climate Communications Barometer provides one of the first snapshots of the climate communications profession, drawing on responses from more than 100 practitioners working across NGOs, nonprofits, government, consulting, philanthropy, academia and the private sector.

The results paint a picture of a profession that is deeply committed and increasingly strategic, but operating under significant pressure. Climate communicators report shrinking resources, growing political headwinds, high levels of burnout, and rising expectations to deliver measurable impact. At the same time, the profession is becoming more evidence-informed, increasingly sophisticated in its messaging, and optimistic about opportunities to improve practice.

Across almost every section of the survey, one theme emerged:

Climate communication is maturing as a profession—but the supporting systems have not yet caught up.
